Many people have been asking me how I lost my weight so here is my weight loss journey. I read this book by my mentor and coach Brooke Castillo called “If I’m So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?” I myself have had that thought plenty of times; I have 2 masters, I’m a nurse practitioner and I thought I knew what I needed to do to lose weight which is eat small frequent meals so I don’t get hungry, eat low fat foods, fresh fruits and veggies and high fiber and exercise as much as possible and at high intensity. I was hungry all the time and gained weight instead of lost when I did high intensity exercise. Nothing seemed to work, I gained and lost the same 30 lbs over and over every few years and then I gained another 25 lbs on top of that mainly because I was so tired of dieting I basically gave up.
Finally, I could not fit into my old clothes and the bigger sized clothes I had bought were now tight. I knew I had to do something. I read the book and then felt even worse because Brooke talks about not eating sugar and flour and I immediately felt defeated because I did not think I could do that. However, she also talked about the reasons why we overeat: overhunger, overdesire and emotional eating and that really made sense to me along with the solutions to the 3 causes of overeating which was limiting foods with sugar, flour, and processed food and managing your thoughts and emotions. I joined her online self coaching group, Self Coaching Scholars where she had programs on overeating, Overdrinking, managing urges and coaching on all of it.
I was skeptical but went all in October 1, 2017 and lost 12 lbs the first month. I was doing fine with less sugar and flour after a few weeks and I found I actually had more energy and was less hungry. Then I went to Sicily and ate and drank my way through that fabulous place. I ate a ton of bread, ate desserts, had lots of wine and gained back all 12 lbs in 2 weeks.
But I learned something; I knew how my body felt off most sugar and flour and then I found out how my body felt after eating a lot of bread, pastas, sweets, wine and I felt bloated, tired and hungry all the time again. I made a decision that I would go back to my eating plan of very little sugar, flour, processed foods and do this for life. I learned how to manage my mind and emotions when faced with countless offers of the good stuff at work, at home, at restaurants, parties, holidays, birthdays, etc. I also discovered that planning what I was going to eat ahead of time took all the thought drama out and saved me a lot of time and drama in the moment. I had no idea how much time I spent thinking about food, preparing, eating, cleaning up when I was eating 6 small meals per day and snacking all the time.
The best part is once I was off sugar, flour and processed food for a few weeks, my desire was less and I was not as hungry. I included more full fat foods like 5% Greek yogurt, avocado, olive oil, full fat ranch dressing (refrigerated), nuts, etc which helped keep me satisfied longer.
I consistently lost weight over the 12 months by eating twice a day with no snacking, (intermittent fasting) which I have talked about in previous blog posts. I drank 2 glasses of wine per week, planned. I also had a “joy eat” or exception meal once a week, where I usually ate out and had pasta or dessert or a burger with fries. The best way to avoid going off plan is to plan for a joy eat once a week and plan what you will eat, when and how much.
