Thought Errors: Why you should question what you have learned about food

Thought errors are thoughts that have created beliefs for us that we have been told are true but in reality there is no evidence that they are true. Belief in these thoughts may keep us stuck in old habits. For example:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day

Eating 6 small meals a day is the best way to keep from getting hungry

Eat all foods in moderation

I need to eat 3 meals a day

Intermittent fasting is abnormal

Eating fat is bad

Then there are thoughts that create unwanted desire and cause us to overeat such as:

Parties without eating or drinking are not fun

Food is one of the most important pleasures of life

Eating sweets is part of life

Celebrating with a meal is what matters

Food should never be boring

It’s normal to overeat and be overweight

Just this once

Cheating is fun

Cutting back is painful

Restriction is not normal

I should be able to eat anything I want

Food for the soul

I challenge you to make a list of your long held food beliefs that are not helping you or are keeping you stuck in an eating pattern that is not working for weight loss. Find the protein, fats, vegetables, fruits, nuts and beans that work the best for your body. Keep a food journal and weight yourself daily to see what foods work with your body, that give you energy and keep you satisfied. Don’t forget to eat enough healthy fat (not low fat) especially at lunch and dinner so you will not need to snack and you won’t be as hungry.

Then make a list of thoughts you want to believe and think on purpose about food. Here are a few that have worked for me:

Eating healthy fats keeps me full longer

Celebrating does not need to include food or alcohol

Intermittent fasting lets me use my own fat for fuel and keeps my insulin levels down

Breakfast is not the most important meal of the day

I use food to fuel my body and let my thoughts and aspirations fuel my soul
