Reflecting On My Weight Loss Journey

It’s coming to the end of year and the decade; so for many people it’s a time of reflection. Reflection about struggles and wins over the past year or 10 years is a great exercise to create awareness of patterns in your life and also to see if you what you have been doing is working or getting you closer to the goals you have for your life.

2.5 years ago I was contemplating yet another diet and feeling so discouraged. I knew I had to do something because even my stretch pants were tight and I felt so uncomfortable in my muffin top and my body in general.

I felt like it was almost impossible to lose weight and keep it off because I hated feeling so deprived all the time. I had been on so many diets and failed. I would lose about 4-5 lbs on the new plan and then sabotage myself and gain it back. Or slowly and painfully lose 30 lbs and then gain it back when I went off the diet and back to my old habits.

I knew after all these years of dieting that doing the same thing was not going to work, so I got help. I read the “Obesity Code” by Dr. Jason Fung which basically said everything that we have been told about losing weight is wrong. It’s not just calories in, calories out, and fat is not the enemy. The cool part about his book is all the science behind it. He talks about hormones in our bodies that regulate fat storage and hunger and how we can reset these hormones by what and how often we eat.

I also joined a self coaching program with a weight loss component which helped me de-bunk a lot of beliefs I had about food that had been there for a long time. When you start questioning what you are thinking it opens up your awareness. I learned how much I was relying on food to help me feel better, to deal with stress, to celebrate, etc.

I learned new ways to cope with stress, allow negative emotions and how to eat to decrease my cravings, have more energy and lose weight. It was not easy and took a lot of effort on my part; but I was willing to do it because I was not starving like on previous eating plans and I was learning how to live in a world surrounded by unhealthy food choices. It was a way I could eat that made sense to me and that I could do for life.

I was able to lose 55 lbs over 1 year and keep it off. Coaching and eating on a plan that is science based is what has helped me turn the corner from yo-yo dieter to weight loss and maintenance success. I can help you do the same.
