I have to admit I am struggling with following through on things I said I would do for myself and my health. Maybe you are having trouble with this too. We make a healthy eating plan and then ditch it when something better comes along.
It could be a “faster” way to lose weight
A birthday celebration you had not planned
Someone brings in your favorite chocolate chip cookies
The next healthiest “detox” shake
OR something bad happens and you use food to make yourself feel better
I don’t know about you but the derailment seems to happen quickly without much thought. Before you know it, you have eaten the food or treat not on your plan. So if planning ahead does not work all the time, what do we do?
We have to go back to what thought caused the derailment. For me, I was feeling entitled and my thought was: I should be able to eat whatever I want now that I’m on maintenance.
Once you have the thought causing the result of eating off plan, then what?
Start asking why questions. Why am I feeling entitled and thinking “I should be able to” thoughts?
Answer the question; hint, I don’t know is not an answer. If you did know, what could it be?
My answer: I let my guard down and was not fully aware when I was eating. This caused my primitive brain to bring back some of my old thoughts and habits around food; like mindless eating and automatically reacting to the thought “that looks good”; instead of reminding myself that particular food is not on my plan and I can have it tomorrow if I want, but I need to plan for it. Most of the time tomorrow comes and you forget about it.
A common excuse for not planning meals ahead of time is there is not enough time.
Isn’t it interesting that we find the time to make others and their needs a priority in our lives; but when it comes to us and our health, we take a back seat and don’t honor our healthy eating plan.
Respect is a feeling. What can you think about yourself to feel more respect?
My go to thought now is:
I treat my body with respect by following my healthy eating plan, even when it gets hard.
If that thought is not believable to you try these thoughts:
I am learning to love myself enough to say no to unplanned things
I have a body that I want to be able to grow old with
I am becoming a person who makes her health a priority
We are human, we are going to make mistakes. Finding the thought and feeling that is causing you to go off plan is so important and will help you with future weight loss success and prevent future derailments.
